Sony bullies RetroPod off the net

Cory Doctorow: Sony sent a bullying shut-down notice to Retropod, a website selling hand-made iPod cases made out of recycled Sport Walkman housings. Moreover, they will be misled into thinking that Sony is backward in its design of products and is going away from miniaturization, as the size of the tape player housing is quite large by today's standards.

The emerging two cultures of the internet

There are two cultures growing - those who can filter, and those who can’t - and it may well be up to us who can to help those who can’t to join the modern world, lest they drag everyone back with them.

NetFlix / TiVo

Later this month, NEWSWEEK has learned, the companies plan to unveil a simple but significant partnership that could shake up the media world.

Skype VoIP

Skype's distinction is that, for now at least, it is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way for individual customers to begin using VoIP. It works this way...

Terminal Man

He always ate a MacDonald's egg and bacon croissant for breakfast and a McDonald's fish sandwich for dinner. (Perhaps one day McDonald's will have the wit to sign Alfred up for a celebrity endorsement.) He always left a tip. Alfred was not, to put it bluntly, a bum.

Stuffed Nose

Normally I tell people that Chinese isn’t really as hard as they think, and that characters are actually pretty easy to remember once you get the hang of it. And then something like this comes along and kicks me in the ass.

Gates response to Apple's critique

In an interview this week with BusinessWeek magazine, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates rejected the notion promoted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs that portable video isn't important.

"Ask kids in the back of a car on a two-hour trip, 'Hey, would you like to have your videos there?' My kids would," Gates said. "I guess Steve's kids just listen to Bach and Mozart. But mine, they want to watch 'Finding Nemo.' I don't know who made that, but it's really a neat movie."

NEW YORK -- When 22-year-old Brigette Abercrombie moved to Manhattan two weeks ago from her rural hometown of Dahlonega, Ga., her father was allowed just a fleeting glimpse of her new third-floor apartment. Philly Considers Wireless Internet for All

PHILADELPHIA - For about $10 million, city officials believe they can turn all 135 square miles of Philadelphia into the world's largest wireless Internet hot spot.

The ambitious plan, now in the works, would involve placing hundreds, or maybe thousands of small transmitters around the city — probably atop lampposts. Each would be capable of communicating with the wireless networking cards that now come standard with many computers.

The Listology

It all started with two observations:
  1. Most folks like to create and share "best" and "worst" lists relating to movies, books, and music, and,
  2. Comparing lists and finding people of similar tastes is a great way to find new things to watch, read, or listen to.

Can Microsoft Beat iTunes

With the opening on Thursday, Microsoft will land itself in a market that Apple Computer pioneered more than a year ago with its iTunes online music store, in much the same way that it took on Netscape in the Web browser business and Sony in the market for console game machines.

Outlook, Gmail & Yahoo! Calendaring

After completing my switchover from Outlook to Gmail this weekend, I'm left figuring out how move the other Outlook functions over to a web service. just found Yahoo! Calendar. This is a LOT more than I expected.
  • Reminders go to IM or E-mail
  • Imports from Outlook
  • Recurring appointments/events
  • Sharing / Sync'ing
  • Add your favorite Sports team
  • Weather

All that's left now is my Outlook "Notes". This is mostly accounts and passwords, and I'm still mulling the security aspect. I've just started using RoboForm, and I think combining this with a removeable device may be it.

STUPID PEOPLE:
for those that are reading this it is most likely not for you. I personally don't deal well with stupid people. I define stupid people in some of the following ways:
1. Those that place bids and complain later on because they were neglegent in reading a description.
2. Those that send there hard earned money and never tell me what the item is that they have purchased.
3. Those that send me there hard earned money and give me no address to ship.
4. those that send there hard earned money with no item, no name, no return address, no clue whatsoever they are paying for.
5. Those that blatently disreguard the terms and conditions outlined in the description.

And the list goes on and on...

Great Moments In Public Education

Atlanta's WSB-AM reports that "a student at Grayson High School, in Gwinnett County, was stopped by a school administrator when he was spotted wearing the shirt that read 'Hempstead, NY 516,' a reference to the Long Island town, and its area code. But, the administrator only saw the first four letters of the town's name, and believed it to be a drug reference":

After being questioned by school officials, Terrell finally convinced them to do a search on the internet and see that there really is, in fact, a Hempstead. After determining the existance [sic] of the town, the boy was allowed to return to class.

At least he didn't come from Pottstown, Pa. (610), or Weed, Calif. (530).

Delicious Library 3.0

Dad, here's your killer application:

Delicious Library offers several ways to enter information about your books, CDs and DVDs into your library, but the slickest method is iSight barcode scanning. Just pick up a book and scan its UPC barcode label with your iSight camera; Library uses image recognition to decode the video at a full 30 fps and then grabs the item's title, picture, and lots of additional detailed information from Amazon.com. The book then appears on your shelf.

The new "shelf view" is one of the most obvious changes to the interface, which emulates the experience of browsing through your bookshelf, allowing you to view the covers of all your books, movies, video games and music on realistic-looking wood shelves just as you would at a movie or book store. In addition, the "Incoming" shelf, where you add media to your library, is patterned after a warehouse with metal shelving units and cardboard boxes.

Bodies of WWI Soldiers Found in Glacier

The soldiers' uniforms were mostly intact including leather belts, a gas mask and a cap with a star on it. Historians are already studying Vicenzi's find and believe the men died during a battle on Sept. 3, 1918, probably killed by a grenade. Italian and Austrian troops clashed in the mountains on that date in what has been called "the great battle." The Austrians won but 11 soldiers were killed.

Computer Gaming Nov. 1982

The games have their critics, of course. Physicians claim that maneuvering a joystick too many hours can lead to "video elbow" and "arcade arthritis." The mental side effects can be equally serious, according to U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. "There's nothing constructive in the games," says Koop. "Everything is kill, destroy, zap the enemy." Retorts TEMPEST virtuoso Leo Daniels, "I think Koop is a quack."
